United Way of Acadiana is excited to receive funding from Lafayette Consolidatd Government and Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation to support the Lafayette Initiative for Food Equity.

Lafayette Parish is facing a concerning issue as more than half of its population lives in what is known as a “food desert.” A food desert is a federally recognized area where the residents experience both low income and limited access to healthy food options. This lack of access has detrimental effects on various aspects of the community, including health outcomes, quality of life, and the economy. The Lafayette Initiative for Food Equity aims to improve the well-being of residents by transforming food access in Lafayette’s Northside. The anticipated impact includes increased access to fresh and healthy food options, improved nutrition for residents, and the creation of a more vibrant and healthier community overall.
